The EGWAY Manifesto
A Call for African-Centered Urban Mobility Innovation
Africa’s transport systems cannot, and should not, mirror those of developed countries. The environmental, political, economic, social, and cultural contexts in Africa are entirely distinct. Our cities are shaped differently, our mobility customs are unique, and our challenges require tailored solutions.
For too long, African urban mobility has relied on imported, “copy-paste” solutions—western models imposed onto African realities. These approaches often fail, not because Africa lacks ambition, but because they ignore the continent’s context. Solutions like subway systems or high-tech infrastructure projects assume conditions that simply do not exist: abundant public funding, established local expertise for maintenance, and robust infrastructure such as a reliable power grid.
This approach is neither viable nor relevant. Africa cannot afford to keep acquiring mobility systems that make little sense within our realities. These misguided investments drain resources, deepen dependency, and leave citizens underserved.
The Way Forward: African Solutions for African Realities
Africa and Africans deserve urban mobility solutions that are designed in alignment with our lived realities. Our transport systems must address the specific challenges and leverage the unique opportunities within African cities. Solutions need to be affordable, scalable, sustainable, and deeply connected to the way our people move, live, and thrive.
What does this mean in practice? It means rejecting the narrative that innovation is imported. Instead, we embrace a vision where African thinkers, innovators, and communities lead the charge in creating mobility systems that resonate with our realities. By grounding solutions in Africa’s context, we pave the way for new and unexpected innovations that could revolutionize urban mobility—not just for Africa, but for the world.
EGWAY: Leading the Charge
EGWAY embodies this vision. We are not just creating technology; we are leading a movement. Our mission is to champion African-driven urban mobility innovation that is bold, practical, and transformative. EGWAY envisions a future where mobility solutions empower our people, connect our cities, and honor the uniqueness of African life.
This is not about rejecting global knowledge—it is about adapting and innovating to create something better, something ours. From informal transport systems to digital platforms that reflect local realities, we are building the future of African mobility. Together, we will redefine what urban mobility means for our continent and inspire the world with solutions rooted in Africa’s creativity, resilience, and strength.
The future of African mobility will not be imported. It will be imagined, created, and led by Africa.
